Author Biography

I started Cruel Irony in 2012 after reviewing my mother's diaries from the mid 1940s. The book started as a simple short story, then continuously grew in scope as new information was uncovered.

Home on the Range

I was born and raised in Wichita Kansas, though spent the majority of my adult life in the San Diego area, with previous stops in Kansas City, Houston, and Atlanta; plus an around the world tour in the Army.

I returned to Wichita in 2014, and am very glad I did. This book could not have been written without close access to so many people and places. Thanks to all of them.

As a professional photographer, I was always attracted to intriguing photographs of the past.

To keep a long story short, I started family genealogical research in 1993 and began collecting and studying vintage photographs shortly thereafter.

I have written numerous books on vintage photographs, photo restoration, and archiving. In 2013 I wrote a light-hearted but serious introspective of my two years in the Army. The title gives a peek at the content.

I found the heroine of Cruel Irony as an intriguing woman with a fascinating story. Initially I thought it would be simply a story of a great-aunt for the family to enjoy. However, the more I looked at it, I thought it would be interesting for others to read as a profile of a woman ahead of her time in the early 20th century.

Also, I hope Cruel Irony inspires others to look deeply at their family history and tell the stories of those who can't. You may be surprised what comes to light.
